German shipbuilding: the rise of business activity
According to the West German Commerzbank (Frankfurt am Main), there is an increase in business activity in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry of Germany. According to the bank's forecast, the increase in production in the industry in 1989 will amount to 4-6% against the level of 1988 and will be the most significant in the last 6 years. As of the beginning of 1989, German shipbuilding companies had orders for ships with a total gross tonnage of about 1 million per ton in the amount of 4,340 million marks in the order portfolio (these figures are the highest since 1982).
During the reorganization of the industry, the production capacities of German shipyards were significantly reduced and currently amount to about 700 thousand per. tons per year, i.e. about 1/3 of what was available just a few years ago.
The number of jobs in German shipbuilding has also decreased. The industry employs about 30 thousand people, which is 10 thousand less than in 1985, and almost half as many as in the mid-70s. However, according to the bank, the influx of orders will allow to stabilize the number of workers in German shipbuilding since 1990.
During the reorganization of the German shipbuilding industry, the technical re-equipment of the industry was carried out. At the shipyard. Mayer Werft (Papenburg) built the world's largest indoor dock. The shipyards have implemented comprehensive automation of production processes. The management of the shipbuilding industry has been reorganized. All 35 West German shipyards engaged in the construction of new vessels are grouped into 3 groups: Bremer Vulkan with subsidiaries Schichau Seebeckwerft AG, Lloyd Werft and Jadeverft; Blom und Foss AG with Thyssen Nordzeeverk; Howald—Sverke Deutsch Werft AG with a subsidiary of HDV-Nobiskrug (Rendsburg).
According to Commerzbank, Germany is a world leader in the restructuring of courts. West German shipyards are modernizing and overhauling passenger ferries, cruise ships and fishing vessels on orders from the USSR and Scandinavian countries.
The ability to organize all types of shipbuilding and ship repair work at the same time allows HDV to have up to 8 ships at once at the shipyards in Kiel and Rendsburg.
Effective management of the industry, the availability of experienced personnel and the developed production of marine equipment allow Germany to occupy a strong position in the global ship market. However, the growing optimism in connection with the increase in orders for new-built vessels requires, according to the management of the Bremer Vulkan company, a balanced approach.
Firstly, the production capacity of the global shipbuilding industry still exceeds the projected demand for ships. Secondly, despite government subsidies, many large shipyards operate unprofitably.
Since the end of 1990, when it is believed that the portfolios of shipbuilding companies will be filled, difficulties will increase in placing short-term orders for new vessels at subsidized prices. Shipowners should be prepared for a possible increase in prices for newly built vessels to a level that ensures the profitable operation of shipbuilding enterprises (without government subsidies) offering "high-tech" vessels.
